PA009: V/A – Selected Liquido Works (2009-2019) (digital)
Release text:
For most artists, there will always be work that falls between the cracks. Where the timing is off or the work just doesn’t fit into any marketable bundle. Often, these works are the most interesting, most personal. Precisely because they are made for love, pleasure or artistic curiosity.
This is the theme for “Selected Liquido Works 2009-2019”. A collection of tracks made through a period of ten years. Previously unreleased, mainly because they were originally never conceived as releases, but made with the simple drive of exploring the material.
With five of the six track being remixes, this gives a common theme:
Says Liquido: “The remix, as a cultural artefact holds a central position in the history of electronic and club music. It’s something that started functional and economical – optimizing new mixes for different uses. But remix, as a practice, has become artistic. A tradition for the primal personal drive of interacting with something you love. And in that, an artistic and cultural conversation”.
“These tracks were basically all made just for the pleasure of making music. At some point, I read about Aphex Twin sitting on 1.000 tracks and suddenly deciding to start releasing music again. And even though nobody can ever compare themselves to RDJ, it got me thinking about these tracks just sitting there. Which is why the title is an quite obvious reference to his Selected Ambient Works.
The cover art is by Kristian Niemann of NiemanssLand. An art collaboration of two brothers working with analog video, creating abstract figures by distorting and manipulating electronic signals.
Liquido’s words for each track:
Do The Spider Dance (Liquido Remix):
The original by Frantz Flottenheimer is a 10 years old, quirky semi-improvised organ based track. For me it had this Austin Powers, groovy swinging 60’s feel, which made me want to dance.
Rev (Liquido Remix):
I first met M422 when we both played a festival for experimental music in Sweden. His sound is dark and sinister and I love it. He self released an EP with this track Rev, a dark ambient type track and I thought the lead bass was the coolest sound I had ever heard and would fit well in a dubstep type setting. I still do!
Polyfemos (Ambient Remix):
Long time friend and musical collaborator released this track on Treibstoff in 2007. The inspiration here was opposite the Rev remix – feeling the need to strip off the rhythmic part and create a more abstract expression for the beautiful melodic synths.
Ogranizer (Liquido Remix):
This is also Jack Rock, and again, his melodic sensibilities come through. The bassline is what blew me away here, and I wanted to make a track that gives that bassline the best stage possible.
Tunnel of Love:
The only original of the release. Created as a jam in one take, and turned out quite special.
Tunnel of Love (Steinfels Remix):
Daniel runs the Tonal label, and he fell in love with this track, pushing out a remix overnight. I love the remix back, and so a nauseating tunnel of love circle jerk is completed.
